Valentino Garavani and his partner Giancarlo Giammetti have announced the launch of the Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum. The downloadable desktop application is set to cover 50 years of Valentino's fashionable career and will showcase more than 300 dresses.
In addition to over 300 dresses from the Valentino archives, the retrospective museum will feature 95 different runway show videos and thousands of images including sketches, illustrations, ad campaigns, fashion editorials, event photos and memorable red carpet moments.
"I see it as part of my legacy. I am happy that thousands of students, young designers and fashion people will be able to see and study my work in every aspect of it, and in a manner easy and accessible for the younger generations. But it is also important to remember things of the past, to review the fashion that has shaped our lives. I would call it ‘Future Memory'." - Valentino Garavani
According to a release the virtual museum would cover over 100,000 square feet if it were real.
The downloadable desktop application launches on Monday December 5th.
After a month of voting shoe lovers have spoken! According to an online poll the sexiest shoe of 2011 is a lace-embroidered Valentino pump.
With about 35,000 voters weighing in between September 26th and October 21st, the lacy Valentino heel took first place in this year’s "Sexy Shoes" contest, created by Footwear News and Saks Fifth Avenue. Last year's winner was a glitzy, multicolored Swarovski crystal-covered slingback by Christian Louboutin.
The winners of the fab footwear contest were chosen from among 25 pairs of shoes, which were originally selected by the editors of FN. Wondering which heels were the 2011 runners up?
Valentino Garavani is part of fashion history and now the man who has been dressing the world's rich and famous for the last 40 years may have a musical made in his honour.
Valentino retired from the fashion group that bears his name in 2007 but he still creates dresses for "special events and special clients". The legendary designer has also been working on a variety of new projects.
This week Valentino spoke with Italy's La Repubblica about a variety of topics including his long-time partner Giancarlo Giammetti, his portrayal in the 2009 documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor and one of those mysterious upcoming projects. The near 80-year-old designer told the newspaper that "we're looking at the possibility of taking my story to Broadway, as a musical."
After the success of Valentino: The Last Emperor, a musical based on Valentino's four decades in haute couture could be pretty fabulous.
Daphne Guinness is a modern style icon. She regularly walks the red carpet wearing outlandish couture, she owns Isabella Blow's entire clothing archive, she has been a muse to countless designers and Tom Ford recently called her "one of the — if not the — most stylish women living. Now Daphne Guinness is the subject of an extensive upcoming exhibition at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.
The exhibition will feature 100 garments and accessories from Guinness' personal collection, including designs from the likes of Alexander McQueen, Azzedine Alaïa, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, John Galliano for Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh and Valentino. The elaborate pieces will be presented in a space that has been designed to look like the New York apartment of the famously stylish beer heiress. A statement from the museum explains the concept behind the show:
"While there have been many exhibitions devoted to great fashion designers, only a few have focused on individual women of style. Yet certain singular women play a crucial role in fashion. Known as fashion or style icons, they are a special type of fashion insider, one who not only inspires designers and brings their clothes to life, but actually creates a look that affects the way other people dress and/or think about dressing."
The Daphne Guinness Exhibition at The Museum at FIT opens on September 16, 2011 and runs until January 7, 2012.
For decades Palermo's Ucciardone prison has been known to its inmates as "The Grand Hotel" – a place where well-connected mafiosi walk around wearing well-cut suits. But now things are going to change... Italian criminals have been banned from wearing designer suits in prison.
The new governor, Rita Barbera, has placed a ban on designer labels such as Armani, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Valentino and Versace and they are no longer permitted inside the walls of the Sicilian jail.
The wives of the prisoners have been left less than happy with Barbera's new rules. "My husband will be left naked," said one. "He only has designer clothes, and that's not because he's flashy but because they last much longer and are better quality. Why humiliate him? Why force us to buy clothes at street markets?
