One of the coolest fashion initiatives taking place in Canada is the incredibly imaginative White Cashmere Collection that raises money and awareness for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Now entering its 8th year, the White Cashmere Collection features breathtaking creations by Canada's leading fashion designers... the catch is they are all crafted in 100 per cent Cashmere Bathroom Tissue.

This year's collection is curated by Canada's own top fashion designer Farley Chatto, who told me "being apart of this initiative is an honour for me. I was one of the first designers to get involved eight years ago so I've come full circle."

For the 2011 collection Farley has assembled a brilliant cast of Canadian designers including: Wesley Badanjak, Philip Sparks and Franco Mirabelli to create Cashmere BT Couture that will feature bridal, evening wear, hats, jewelry and for the first time — men's wear.

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to stop by the 2011 Cashmere photo shoot at 1212 Decor in Toronto for an early preview of this year's creations. Here's a look behind the scenes at the 2011 White Cashmere Collection photo shoot.

Toronto Fashion Week doesn't officially start until Monday March 28th but that didn’t stop Philip Sparks from kicking things off a little early. Monday night models strutted the hybrid runway at the Burroughes Building on Queen Street West in Toronto showing off twenty-four looks that celebrated Canadian winter.

"This collection celebrates Canadian winter with a focus on wool suiting and signature outerwear. Functional menswear details like flannel lining in denim and triple ply shirting add warmth while maintaining a slim cut. Women's pieces feature pin tucking and exaggerated pleats."

Philip Sparks Presents 2011 Fall Looks - Men

For men, the designer offered casual flannel lined indigo jeans, wool shawl collar pea coats, cotton canvas chinos, wool blazers and an uber cool black and red check wool suit. Accessories were key in completing many of the runway looks. An oversized mountain sheep scarf made a bold statement and an Ontario blanket scarf was exceptionally cool.

This was Sparks second time presenting looks for women. The designer launched his line for gals last year and showed how serious he is about womenswear with Monday night's collection.

The women's pieces were exceptionally strong... feminine silhouettes dominated the rogue fashion week runway. A wool and cashmere tweed blazer, a wool and cashmere tweed skating dress, a silk cocktail dress and a fabulous maple leaf photo print cotton sateen cocktail dress were among the standout pieces. Complementing the warm and fuzzy mountain sheep scarves for men and women? A retro mountain sheep beehive hat.

Every piece a cozy celebration of nostalgic Canadiana.

Paws For The Cause - 2010

Four-legged friends walking the runway for a good cause?

It's true. Paws for the Cause is a new fundraising event out of Toronto that is rallying fashion and pet lovers to celebrate in style: a dog fashion show and a photo campaign inspired by the iconic images of The Sartorialist. The best part of the inaugural fundraiser? 100% of the proceeds go to animal welfare, specifically the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Event founder and co-chair Laura Serra hopes to use fashion to draw a little attention to the fight against animal cruelty.
"Everyone has a cause that is close to their heart... For me, that issue is animal cruelty. The thought of someone hurting an animal, intentionally or unintentionally, evokes an uncontrollable passion in me. The fact that it happens every day with little to no consequence is unfathomable in my mind and I hope, through this initiative, we can start the process to change penalties."
On Thursday October 28th pups will will be dressed by celebrated Canadian fashion designers including: Ashley Rowe, Beckerman, Joeffer Caoc, Jules Power, Philip Sparks, Roots, Shared Design Collective, Tavan Mitto, Rita Liefhebber and Moon. The impressive list of designers got me wondering... what will the little dogs strutting their stuff actually be wearing? I got a few early clues and let's just say if the Beckerman gals have their way... a barking luxury bag.

Philip Sparks has been delivering classic tailored looks for men since 2007, but at last night's spring 2011 presentation the designer turned out a well-edited array of looks for both men and women. Models walked the hybrid runway at the Burroughes Building on Queen Street West showing off twenty-one looks inspired by early spring rain, days before the official start of Toronto Fashion Week.

“The inspiration for the collection was rain and Canadian spring. I had an umbrella that I found a year ago after a rain storm. It was totally turned inside out and flipped over sideways.”

Last night young Canadian designer Philip Sparks presented his fall 2010 collection at the Burroughes Building on Queen Street West in Toronto. The show was a success... and I'm not just saying that because I have been a huge fan of his for years. After the show (be sure to check out the low down on the show here) I had the chance to slip backstage and talk to Philip about the nautical collection and much more. Here’s what the designer had to say.

Fashionist Interview - Philip Sparks - Fall 2010

Christopher: Tell me about your fall/winter 2010 collection
Philip: So the collection for this fall is inspired by Moby Dick. We used that as a starting point. The collection has a very maritime... navy... nautical feeling to it. But it’s not as formal as you might see in the military. It’s a little bit more utilitarian.

Christopher: If you could only wear one piece from the collection what would it be? What is the one stand out piece for you in the collection?
Philip: I would say the short cropped pea coat.
Christopher: I have to tell you mine would be the black wool melton cape coat!
Philip: That’s my number two!

Christopher: Why did you choose to once again show outside of Toronto Fashion Week?
Philip: My studio is on the 5th floor (of the Burroughes Building). Its one flight of stairs up from my studio and it’s a beautiful space and it works perfectly for us. This is our fourth time showing in here! I think a lot of our guests enjoy the intimate experience of coming to our offsite shows. What else can I say it really works for the brand.

Christopher: In terms of timing?
Philip: In terms of timing... fashion week was suppose to be next week so we were originally scheduled for the day before. We did a trade show in New York and then ten days later we did Montreal Fashion Week and then 10 days later was this. That was our schedule and when the week moved we decided to stick to our schedule.

Christopher: What do you love about the Canadian fashion scene?
Philip: I think there is a lot going on with Canadian fashion. It’s building and there’s definitely excitement! Look at the crowd of people out here tonight. They love fashion and they are excited to get out there and see what’s new.

Christopher: Which Canadian designers do you most admire or are you most inspired by?
Philip: I’ve always enjoyed Philippe Dubuc from Montreal. Before I started he was somebody that I looked up to.

Christopher: Which international designers do you most admire or are most inspired by?
Philip: Thom Browne.

Christopher: Where can Canadian fashion watchers buy Philip Sparks?
Philip: Right now the spring collection is in stores. You can find it at Delphic (706 Queen Street West) in Toronto. It’s at Simon’s (977, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest) in Montreal and at boutique duo (30, rue Prince-Arthur Ouest) in Montreal as well.

Christopher: Last question. Anything else on the horizon we can look forward to?
Philip: We’re also doing a small capsule collection of knitwear and accessories for the holidays.

Philip Sparks: Fall/Winter 2010
Toronto Fashion Week
Thursday March 11, 2010

Toronto Fashion Week doesn't officially start until Sunday March 28th but that didn’t stop a Philip Sparks from kicking things off a little early. Last night the menswear designer started things off for Toronto’s fashion community with a presentation of his amazing Moby Dick inspired Fall 2010 collection.

The backdrop of Toronto’s first unofficial show of fashion week happened over at the uber trendy Burroughs Building on Queen West. The exposed brick with the sun setting in room gave a warm intimate feel and definitely added to the entire experience. One by one handsome lads walked out giving the audience and photographers a glimpse of the nautical-inspired clothes before taking a spot amidst the boat yard set of wooden crates, a canoe frame and massive unwound rope. Altogether there were 12 looks of tweed and wool each styled with timepieces by sponsor Hamilton Watches.

Here’s a look at the presentation:

Was it new or crazy? No… but there was a nice twist on classic men’s pieces that will allow the collection to stand on its own but still remain very sellable. The collection was indeed impressive.

Make sure you check out my backstage interview with Philip.
