10. Versace for H&M madness

2011 - Fashionist year in review - 10 - Versace for H&M Madness
[Above: Who expected the global hysteria surrounding the debut collection of Versace for H&M? Ummm... everyone.]

Forget the Missoni for Target collaboration that famously crashed target.com... the craziest fashion collaboration of 2011 had to be the Versace for H&M extravaganza that hit stores on Saturday November 18th. After months of serious hype, Donatella's vintage Versace-inspired collection hit select H&M stores across the globe. Celebs wearing the most sought after pieces, overnight lineups, in-store madness and eBay markups followed. Viva Versace!

Dolce & Gabbana slam fast fashion collaborations

Dreaming of a Dolce & Gabbana collaboration with H&M or Target collaboration? According to Domenico Dolce it's never going to happen. In a recent interview with WWD the designer insisted that the Italian design duo would not be following in the footsteps of designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Lanvin and Versace.

Stefano Gabbana: [laughs] I ask him if he goes to mass to design collections...
Domenico Dolce: It's classic elegance. Elegance is always beautiful, contemporary and timeless. It doesn't have to be about the latest trend, or from a signature brand. Its forever. Recently, it's all "trusciume" [in Sicilian, cheap, trashy] — there's no quality, these fast-fashion companies churning out looks. People thought it was cool, but it's cheap. You can't expect quality at 20 euros [$27]. It's like good codfish at 5 euros [$6.70] -- how can it be? But it's not a matter of price. Elegance is intellectual; it's about good taste, the cut, proportions, quality, how you carry yourself.

Looks like Dolce & Gabbana fans will have to keep saving up for the real thing.

Earlier this year Dolce & Gabbana announced that they were discontinuing their cheaper D&G line to concentrate on their namesake collection.

H&M admits to using fake bodies with real heads on website

H&M is back in the news today and it's not because of a big name fashion collaboration. The mega-retailer has admitted to regularly using computer-generated images to model their clothes and accessories online.

According to Jezebel (via Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet) H&M has designed "a body that can display clothes made for humans better than humans can". The retailer then digitally pastes the head of a real model on the "perfect" computer generated body in post-production. The image is then used on H&M's e-commerce site.

"It's not about ideals or to show off a perfect body, we are doing this to show off the garments... This is done for all garments, not just underwear, it applies to both women's and men's clothing." - H&M Spokesperson Håcan Andersson

The policy doesn't seem to apply to various H&M ad campaigns that feature big name models and appear in magazines and on billboards around the globe.

What do you think of H&M's digitally modified models? Is the practise better or worse than Photoshopping a real model?
