An image from Donna Karan's spring/summer 2012 ad campaign featuring Adrianna Lima with two Haitian children has been met with disapproval from many fashion watchers across the internet.
Photographed by Russell James, the ad campaign was inspired by the work of Haitian artist Philippe Dodard and shot on location in Jacmel in the south of the country. In one of the images from the ad campaign, supermodel (and Victoria's Secret Angel) Adriana Lima wears an olive green jumpsuit and strikes a sultry pose while two local children appear to blend into the shadowed background. Fashion commenter's across the internet immediately suggested that the ad has racist undertones.
Donna Karan's intent was for the ad campaign to draw attention to the plight of the Haitians. It should also be noted that Donna Karan spent a considerable amount of time in Haiti following the tragic earthquake last year, and her spring/summer 2012 collection is heavily influenced by her continuous charity work there.
Still. Fashionable commenter's are labeling the image insensitive.
What do you think about the ad featuring Adrianna and the Haitian children? Do you think the image is racist or do you think that claim is shortsighted and inappropriate? Are the local children being used as props for the high-fashion photos?

January 2010: Tavi's Front Row Hat Controversy
14 year old blogger extraordinaire Tavi Gevinson ( Style Rookie) takes her front-row seat at Dior’s Couture show in Paris wearing a massive hair bow courtesy of Stephen Jones. A reporter from Grazia stirs controversy after tweeting: "At Dior. Not best pleased to be watching couture through 13 year old Tavi's hat". Jealousy? Perhaps... but the tweet starts a fashion battle on front-row bloggers.
Costume designer Patricia Field turned each of the Sex And The City characters into fashion icons. Think about it... each of the characters had their own unique style, started trends and had more than their fair share of fashionable moments. This week to help get ready for the theatrical release of the Sex And The City 2 flick I'm taking a look back at each of the characters most fashionable moments. So let's get things started with Miranda!
Cynthia Nixon's character Miranda Hobbs was a career woman and her wardrobe was dictated more by her profession than any other SATC character. Miranda wasn't the most fashionable character but we still loved her. Throughout the course of the series and that first movie we saw our favourite redhead wear everything from sweatpants to tailored business suits.
Here's a quick look back at 10 of Miranda's most memorable looks (both good and bad) during Sex And The City:
The Freak Show Season 2, Episode 3
In "The Freak Show" Carrie dated a string of freaky guys and convinced Miranda to go on a double date with a guy who hadn't left the city in 10 years! The date doesn't go so well and a frustrated Miranda gives up on dating and ends up walking the streets of NYC in over-sized overalls, a frumpy blue jacket and a baseball cap. Perhaps not her most fashionable moment.
Often referred to as the "Oscar night of fashion" the Costume Institute Met Gala is one of the biggest nights of the year for the fashion industry. The high profile gala has become one of the most visible and successful charity events around the world. Each May, the Metropolitan Museum Of Art holds their annual gala benefit which is their primary fund-raising event. The bash celebrates the opening of the museum's spring exhibition and the industry’s biggest names come out wearing their designer best in support of a chosen fashion theme.
This year’s theme for the annual celebration is "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity," and while we have to wait to until later tonight to see the fantastic gowns that parade down the red carpet here’s a look back at years past:

There is no doubt about it. The annual Academy Award red carpet is the most watched fashion event across the globe. While it is one of my craziest nights… I am typing like a mad man preparing best and worst dressed lists to get up promptly… it is also one of my favourite nights. I just love watching the red carpet… seeing which actresses will wear the most glamorous designer gown… seeing which actress will earn the title of "best dressed".
Every year I watch and select my best dressed and worst dressed ladies for Sympatico… so who made the best dressed list this year at the 82nd annual Academy Awards?
Jennifer Lopez looked incredibly glamorous in a stunning pale pink Giorgio Armani Prive gown with Swarovski crystals; Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock looked absolutely stunning in a floor-length metallic and lace Marchesa gown; The incredible Penelope Cruz looked outstanding in a deep burgundy satin dress by Donna Karan; One of my all time fave red carpet celebs Demi Moore looked incredible in her pale and dramatic Versace gown; Anna Kendrick looked absolutely glamorous in a off the shoulder Elie Saab couture gown; Amanda Seyfried looked like a princess in this icy strapless Armani Prive creation; Vera Farmiga wore one of the most dramatic in a fabulous fuchsia ruffled gown by Marchesa; Last year’s Best Actress winner, Kate Winslet looked elegant and sophisticated walking the red carpet in a metallic Atelier Yves Saint Laurent gown; Kristen Stewart looked absolutely gorgeous in a navy silk organza Monique Lhuillier gown; Cameron Diaz was simply dazzlilng in a champagne Oscar de la Renta strapless gown. To check out my best dressed picks for Sympatico and my full thoughts on their glam gowns click here! Now... who made the worst dressed list at the 82nd annual Academy Awards?
Fashionable favourite Sarah Jessica Parker walked the Oscar red carpet in a confusing pale yellow Chanel haute couture gown and a frizzy bouffant do; Avatar actress and red carpet fashionista Zoe Saldana wore a questionable over-the-top Givenchy haute-couture tie-died gown; Charlize Theron wore a strapless Christian Dior dress with croissant style rosettes on the breasts; Diane Kruger wore an awkward and frilly Little Boo Peep Chanel gown; Carey Mulligan dissed Anna Wintour’s advice and opted for a black Prada gown with embellished charms of knives, forks and scissors; Deborah Ann Woll underwhelmed in a dull and drab lilac gown; Winning Director Kathryn Bigelow wore a tired Mother of the Bride gown; The eccentric Maggie Gyllenhaal wore an interesting Dries van Noten gown with a summery print; Little Miley Cyrus wore a plunging Jenny Packham dress that she just couldn’t fill. For my complete worst dressed list on Sympatcio and to find out why I dissed these gals click here! And that’s the wrap on the red carpet for another Oscar year. Hard to believe! What did you think about this year’s Oscars? More importantly what did you think of this year's Oscar red carpet? (Photos courtesy of: Getty Image Entertainment)
