Dolce & Gabbana slam fast fashion collaborations

Dreaming of a Dolce & Gabbana collaboration with H&M or Target collaboration? According to Domenico Dolce it's never going to happen. In a recent interview with WWD the designer insisted that the Italian design duo would not be following in the footsteps of designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Lanvin and Versace.

Stefano Gabbana: [laughs] I ask him if he goes to mass to design collections...
Domenico Dolce: It's classic elegance. Elegance is always beautiful, contemporary and timeless. It doesn't have to be about the latest trend, or from a signature brand. Its forever. Recently, it's all "trusciume" [in Sicilian, cheap, trashy] — there's no quality, these fast-fashion companies churning out looks. People thought it was cool, but it's cheap. You can't expect quality at 20 euros [$27]. It's like good codfish at 5 euros [$6.70] -- how can it be? But it's not a matter of price. Elegance is intellectual; it's about good taste, the cut, proportions, quality, how you carry yourself.

Looks like Dolce & Gabbana fans will have to keep saving up for the real thing.

Earlier this year Dolce & Gabbana announced that they were discontinuing their cheaper D&G line to concentrate on their namesake collection.

Fashion Ad Flashback- 1991 Dolce & Gabbana ad starring Linda Evangelista and Maximo Morrone

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana described their spring/summer 1991 collection as "the remnants of a romantic purity merged alongside erotic dreams of Monica Witti and Gina Lollobrigida".

The black and white ads promoting the "Love" collection were shot by photographer Steven Meisel and they perfectly captured the designer's ode to femininity. Linda Evangelista dyed her hair blonde and struck more than a few sultry poses with Argentina-born model Maximo Morrone.

The season was a decisive transition for the Italian label and the spring/summer 1991 ads mark the beginning of "sexy" Dolce & Gabbana woman.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana call an end to D&G‎

On Thursday Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana sent a troupe of D&G models down the runway during Milan Fashion Week. Shortly after the show the design duo announced that they would be closing the fashion label in order to concentrate on their main collection.

D&G is Dolce & Gabbana's younger label and for 17 years the D&G aesthetic has always been young and super sporty... the label has also made the company a lot of money. The hip off-shoot has been a significant driver of the company's impressive growth, but the decision will ideally expand the scope of the signature line.

"We are going through a very happy moment of our lives... From the upcoming seasons, D&G will become part of Dolce & Gabbana, giving even more strength and energy to our collections."

The announcement didn't come as a surprise to many industry experts. Rumours swirled earlier this year that the last D&G collection was going to be the spring/summer 2012 collection.

After the announcement was made some fashion journalists suggested that D&G's demise is due to financial decline, but Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana insist the opposite is true. The designers claim that they have been toying with the idea of focusing on the signature line for about two years and were feeling galvanized by the prospects of further growing it by "working on its DNA."

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana explained that loyal D&G customers will still be able to see the iconic logo, but only because it's an abbreviation of their surnames.

In 1992 Steven Meisel shot a posse of supermodel's for Dolce & Gabbana's fall 1992 "The Trip" collection. The black and white photos are memorable... but the most iconic image from the ad campaign has to be a young Kate Moss posing with Nadja Auermann wrapped in a feather boa.

Dolce & Gabbana Tries To Silence Facebook Activists

This week a consumer call to action ended with Dolce & Gabbana deleting Facebook wall posts made by members of Change.org. Led by the Clean Clothes Campaign, activists were demanding that Dolce & Gabbana stop using a sandblasting process on their denim products out of concern for the health of workers. Messages like "Killing workers isn't sexy" and "Please ban sandblasting because there is no need for someone to die to make good looking jeans" were posted and subsequently deleted from the luxury label's Facebook wall.

During the highly dangerous sandblasting process sand is fired at jeans under high pressure, giving denim that distinct “worn” look. The process can cause a potentially lethal pulmonary disease called silicosis from the inhaled particles and there are even reports of workers in both Turkey and Bangladesh who have been killed during the process. A number of major brands, including Esprit, Levi's, H&M and Gucci have already abolished sandblasted jeans in their collections.

Last month Versace committed to banning the process of sandblasting jeans following similar pressure from activists.

To date Dolce & Gabbana has stated that they have no intention of banning the controversial process.

Daphne Guinness Gets An Exhibit At The Museum At FIT

Daphne Guinness is a modern style icon. She regularly walks the red carpet wearing outlandish couture, she owns Isabella Blow's entire clothing archive, she has been a muse to countless designers and Tom Ford recently called her "one of the — if not the — most stylish women living. Now Daphne Guinness is the subject of an extensive upcoming exhibition at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.

The exhibition will feature 100 garments and accessories from Guinness' personal collection, including designs from the likes of Alexander McQueen, Azzedine Alaïa, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, John Galliano for Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh and Valentino. The elaborate pieces will be presented in a space that has been designed to look like the New York apartment of the famously stylish beer heiress. A statement from the museum explains the concept behind the show:

"While there have been many exhibitions devoted to great fashion designers, only a few have focused on individual women of style. Yet certain singular women play a crucial role in fashion. Known as fashion or style icons, they are a special type of fashion insider, one who not only inspires designers and brings their clothes to life, but actually creates a look that affects the way other people dress and/or think about dressing."
