"... The truth is not a single screen performance is responsible for branding Elizabeth Hurley into our collective memory. And yet, she is emblazoned there, thanks to her having stepped out one night in the sartorial equivalent of the shot heard 'round the world. All it took was one dress ―"That Dress"― as it was tagged by the media the morning after Hurley's appearance at the world premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral in London. Upending her usual tabloid-captioned capacity as Hugh Grant's girlfriend, Hurley stepped out of a limo and into the paparazzi's viewfinders. ..."
In a behind-the-scenes video of the Alexander McQueen runway show and boutique opening in Beijing in late October, Sarah Burton talks about how she made the mosaic dresses seen in the Alexander McQueen fall/winter 2011 collection.
Apparently the dresses (and matching heels) were constructed using broken plates. Sarah Burton explains:
"We hand-painted 10 different plates. Then we sort of dissected them as if it was broken, so we did a pattern like it was broken. Then we engineered the image onto a bodice. Then we handcut all the porcelain pieces out from the mold we had. Then we made each of those pieces again individually and numbered them. It was like a jigsaw puzzle."
As expected the red blue carpet at the Savoy Hotel in London was filled with fashionable A-listers for Monday night's 2011 British Fashion Awards.
Here's a look at a few of the biggest names who attended last night's big bash in style.
[Victoria Beckham wore a black halter backless dress with a pleated skirt from her fall 2011 collection. Sarah Burton wore a black dress to take home the "Designer of the Year" award. Stella McCartney wore a printed jumpsuit from her recent spring 2012 collection and Marc Jacobs suited up to present VB with her fashionable award.]
In a new interview with iconic Hong Kong luxury store Lane Crawford, McQueen creative director Sarah Burton claims that the late designer found inspiration in everything including classic works of art, popular culture and 90's sitcoms.
Despite the designer's well-documented struggles with depression and his tragic 2010 suicide, Lee Alexander McQueen watched Friends and (at least) once found a little inspiration courtesy of Joey Tribbiani played by Matt LeBlanc.
"I remember him saying to me, 'I watched Friends last night, did you see the shirt that Joey was wearing?' But then, he would get a Van Eyck book out, so it was this kind of mad mix. There's no snobbery to it. He had this way of making you look at everything for inspiration so you didn't just go, 'Ok, we're doing Seventies.'" - Sarah Burton
McQueen inspired by Joey Tribbiani? Can you even picture the dark designer saying: "How you doin'?"
What could possibly follow this year's blockbuster "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty" exhibition at the Met? Women's Wear Daily is reporting that the curators at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute will celebrate two of the most influential women in fashion. The spring 2012 exhibit will feature the work of Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli.
Prada is a household name these days thanks to 62-year-old Miuccia Prada. She entered her family's business 33 years ago after gaining a Pd.D in political science and has turned the Italian label into one of the biggest names in fashion.
Elsa Schiaparelli, who died in 1973, was a revolutionary force in the world of women's fashion. Elsa was one of Coco Chanel's biggest rivals, the queen of surrealist fashion and a collaborator with artists such as Salvador Dalí and Alberto Giacometti. She was also the first designer to stage a runway show, using live models, as is the norm today.
The Metropolitan Museum has declined to comment on next year’s exhibit.
The cast of Glee (minus Amber Riley and Naya Rivera) are lending their voices to help promote an annual September event celebrating style and shopping. Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, Jenna Ushkowitz, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Harry Shum Jr., Darren Criss and the rest of the cast covered David Bowie's 1980 track "Fashion" for a new music video to promote Fashion's Night Out.
In the video Lea Michele rocks a silver Balmain dress from the fall/winter 2011 collection, Dianna Agron wears an ensemble from the Marc Jacobs fall/winter 2011 collection and the rest of the cast don designer duds from Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Alexander McQueen and Dries Van Noten.
Even Jane Lynch makes a fashionable appearance, carrying Sue Sylvester's trademark megaphone declaring "I just love fashion" and "Now get out and shop!" at the end of the video.
The third Fashion's Night Out is to be held on September 8th in cities around the world and will feature special events and sales sponsored by stores and designers.
London has overtaken New York City and grabbed the top spot in a yearly list of the world's fashion capitals thanks to Duchess of Cambridge and the late Alexander McQueen. According to a survey by the Global Language Monitor, a company that analyze trends in word usage, London is the new fashion capital of the world based on what impact the city had on fashion through the media.
Global Language Monitor found that London had shifted from third place to first in the past year knocking the U.S. city off the top spot for the first time in several years. Bekka Payack, fashion correspondent for the Texas-based organization that tracks trends in print and social media, said:
"We are seeing what the impact of two genuine media stars, Princess Catherine (the former Kate Middleton) and Alexander McQueen can have upon a global ranking. Our numbers show that it was their presence that tipped the victory to London over New York."
Here's the list of the top ten fashion capitals around the world according to Global Language Monitor's 2011 survey.
1. London 2. New York 3. Paris 4. Milan 5. Los Angeles 6. Hong Kong 7. Barcelona 8. Singapore 9. Tokyo 10. Berlin
It's been more than a month since Kate Moss got married to her longtime love, drummer Jamie Hince and now Vogue magazine is giving readers a look at the supermodel's nuptials.
The September issue of the fashion bible features a shot of Kate wearing an Alexander McQueen dress from the fall runway collection but inside the issue it's all about Kate... and her custom Galliano dress. There are lots of pretty pictures (courtesy of photographer Mario Testino) to accompany Hamish Bowles' detailed account of what happened at the fashionable wedding... that was inspired but a questionable reality show. According to Bowles, the 37-year-old finally decided to get married after watching My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Hamish writes:
It was curling up together in front of the compelling British television documentary series Big Fat Gypsy Weddings that appears to have sealed the deal. "I am so romantic about Gypsies," Kate explains. "They're not allowed to do anything until they get married. So they all get married really young, at sixteen. You can't believe the dresses. They’re like blinging butterflies times ten; they can’t move down the aisle! It's so genius. I was just watching Jamie, so cute, and I was like, these girls, they just spend their whole life waiting for that day—let's do it!"
But most importantly, the European Editor at Large for Vogue spoke with John Gallian who designed Kate's dress — his first interview since getting fired from Christian Dior.
They discussed everything on the phone, and then, when John was out of rehab for the first of four marathon fittings, he brought her "bags full of bits, and pulled tulle and sequins and veils and flowers out. And then we just kind of pinned things together, like the old days, you know?"
"She was very professional and very demanding," says Galliano, who was inspired by Jazz Age photographs of Zelda Fitzgerald. He had sent a friend to a beloved vintage fair ("because I couldn't go"), who returned with "a beautiful rosary, which I thought must have been from a fallen angel." For John it evoked his late partner-in-design Stephen Robinson. "So Stephen is watching," he says, "nestled in the back of the bow."
... "She dared me to be John Galliano again," the designer tells me. "I couldn’t pick up a pencil. It’s been my creative rehab."
