I love lists... in fact it's probably safe to say I pretty much live for them... and since it's the end of the year they are everywhere! This is a good thing because who doesn't love a good end of the year list!
I'm sure many readers here are fashionable followers of Fashionism's weekly Style Winners and Losers round up. Well each year it is kind of a tradition to take a step back and figure out which red carpet darlings deserve to be mentioned in our SWL "year in review"... for reference (or bordeom) you can check out last years Top 10 Style Winners of 2008 or Top 10 Style Losers of 2008.
This year we did something a little different. The fabulous folks at Fashionism asked me to get in front of the lens and get out my thoughts on the 2009 red carpet on camera. So sit back, perhaps skip the popcorn, and enjoy:
Year in Review - Fashion for Less: From Isaac Mizrahi for Target to Matthew Williamson and Jimmy Choo for H&M, I chat about 2009's best designer labels for less.
I hope you enjoy watching them and hopefully you will find yourself agreeing with most of my picks! I truly can't wait to do it all again next year. I hope you all have a fantastic new year...
These days we are not only seeing our favourite celebs wearing designer threads on the red carpet... we are seeing them as brand ambassadors while we flip through the pages of any fashion magazine.
Have you flipped through an issue of Vogue lately? There is no denying that celebs are giving models a run for their money! Well with 2009 coming to a wrap I thought there was no better time to look back at some of the amazing fashion ads we saw this year that featured... you guessed it... celebs. After all... this year there were so many exciting celebrity ad campaigns.
How many do you remember? How many did you love? Here are just a few of my favourite celeb ad campaigns that we saw this year:
Givenchy’s spring 2010 advertising campaign is about to hit the newsstands. The women’s and men’s wear campaign was shot by famed photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott...what aren’t they shooting these days? Anyways... it’s the second season that the two have shot the ads for Givenchy and here they are:
Interesting. Actually... more than interesting. These ads are bordering on hot! What do you think of Givenchy’s re-invented image for their spring ad campaign?
French businessman Yves Rocher, the man who founded Yves Rocher beauty products, died Saturday at the age of 70. Rocher is to be buried Wednesday in the Brittany town of La Gacilly where he was born.
Inspired by the herbs and plants of his native region, Yves founded the company that bears his name in 1959 as a mail order company. He then transformed the small little company into one of the world’s most well-known beauty brands. Who hasn't been in a Yves Rocher shop or have products in their bathroom cupboards? There are currently 2,000 stores in over 80 countries around the world and the company generates around $2.9 billion in sales annually.
Just like an early Christmas present... here it is! The first trailer for the Sex And The City 2 movie:
Now I am excited and if that doesn't get you excited you are no fan of the fashionable franchise! I may re-watch some old episodes over the break to get in the SATC mood.
It’s that time of year... when fashion lovers begin to see everything that the next season has to offer. Of course my favourite part has to be the amazing sneak peaks we get of the coolest spring/summer advertisements. They are going to begin popping up everywhere!
The latest advertising campaign we can catch a glimpse of is for Lanvin’s spring/summer 2010 collection. The ad is shot by Steven Meisel and features supermodel Jamie Bochert caught in crazy motion... Alber Elbaz (Lanvin’s artistic director) said of the ads “I thought maybe we need a bit of action”.
Ummmm... yeah. Mission accomplished. Totally stylin’ don’t you think?
But it’s not only about the ladies for Lanvin... Next up we have a peak at the risque advertising campaign for the men’s collection. Elbaz had photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, who are a married couple, appear in the advertising campaign. He is wearing Lanvin of course and she is... well painted red.
Creepy or stylish... I can't really decide. The campaigns will show up in fashion magazines in February. Let me know your thoughts.
It’s been a tough year for everyone in the fashion industry and Ben Sherman reminded us of the challenging financial times on Friday when it was announced that the British-based clothing company would be dropping their womenswear collections altogether. After continuing operating losses through 2008 and 2009 the move seems inevitable.
Wow.
The good news is Ben Sherman will continue on with their menswear collections which actually make up 85-90% of overall sales.
Miles Gray, outgoing chief executive of the Ben Sherman Group stated: “We propose to concentrate on what we do best. We have a 50 year history in producing great menswear with significant success internationally with leading store groups. We will also continue to open our own stores concentrating on our complete menswear lifestyle offer.”
Ben Sherman has always really been known for the guys stuff… but what do you think of the news?
I am a huge Madonna fan... and I am a huge Dolce & Gabbana fan... so when Dolce & Gabbana announced that Madge would play model for their upcoming advertising campaign I was a happy boy.
Madonna and the boys have a long history. True fashionistas will know that Madonna is actually one of the main reasons the boys found their mainstream popularity. It all started with her very public Dolce & Gabbana shout outs in 1990. After that Domenico and Stefano designed iconic costumes for her Girlie Show and Sticky And Sweet concert tours in 1993 and 2008. In November Dolce & Gabbana annouced that they would again join forces with pop superstar to showcase their spring/summer 2010 collection and that campaign had been shot in New York by superstar photographer Steven Klein. Now Swide.com (Dolce & Gabbana's on-line mag) has given us a little preview of that collaboration.
Dolce & Gabbana's Sicilian inspired spring/summer 2010 collection is a return to Italian roots and the ad campaign is inspired by iconic Italian actress Anna Magnani in the 1951 Luchino Visconti film Bellissima. Madonna plays Italian housewife and is shot washing dishes, chopping veggies and eating pasta. The 8 campaign images were shot in black and white and will appear in fashion magazines around the world at the beginning of January.
On Madonna appearing in their forthcoming campaign, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana said, “To have Madonna in our campaign is a dream come true”.
I love the shots and am excited to see the remaining 5 next month. What do you think?

Without a doubt Julianne Moore is one of the most talented actresses in Hollywood. Four Oscar nominations and a long list of starring roles in countless critically acclaimed films have put the famous redhead on the red carpet too many times for me to count. Now the actress hasn’t always been recognized for killer red carpet style but she is about to leave her mark on the fashion industry with an upcoming ad campaign. Yup, Julianne will appear in Bulgari’s spring/summer 2010 jewelry and watch advertising campaign! Some may be thinking it’s an unusual choice for the company that has been setting the standard for Italian style in jewellery and luxury goods. I completely disagree. Julianne is a perfect choice!
Now the campaign has already been shot by super hot photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot. Let me just say that the dynamic duo shooting this ad makes the whole concept even more exciting. Apparently Julianne sports a pair of 115-carat Colombian teardrop emerald earrings, Serpenti snake bracelets and shows off the label’s new “Chandra” bag in chestnut and Prussian blue leather. Now the “Eccentric Charisma” ads will debut in fashion mags in February 2010 and we still have to wait for a preview... but in the meantime what do you think of Bulgari’s choice?
As far as I'm concerned...year after year some of the coolest advertising campaigns come from M•A•C Cosmetics. Think about it... each year we get different celebs tapped to front the cosmetic giants’ annual Viva Glam campaign and we get fantastic pics for a good cause. Just in case you don't know the annual ad series promotes a special range of lip sticks and glosses and donates all of the proceeds to HIV/AIDS research and treatment.
Right now we’ve got Fergie lookin all glam but the next ladies who are taking the spotlight for the spring 2010 M•A•C Viva Glam campaign are Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga. Check them out as photographed by Ellen von Unwerth:
Lady Gaga is apparently everywhere right now... what's up with that? I love the ad and I will say I'm glad to see Cyndi! She's looks pretty great! Of course any of us would look that good if we had that much make-up and airbrushing.
It’s hard to believe the ad campaign has been around for so long. It was back in 1994, when M•A•C first introduced the first Viva Glam shade... an outspoken deep red, that was universal in its appeal and its glamour. We've been getting serious glamour ever since. We've had former Viva Glam spokespeople include celebrities like Christina Aguilera, Dita Von Teese, Linda Evangelista, Boy George, Rupaul and Missy Elliot... just to name a few.
